Bat-tastic Celebration

The Cradle of Forestry’s Bat-tastic Celebration is a one-day event that is a culmination of the local celebration of International Bat Week (October 21-27). Bat Week celebrates the role of bats in nature, and at this local celebration, children and adults can visit info and activity tables to learn more about bats and what they can do to help #SaveTheBats, from 11am to 3pm.

The Legend of Tommy Hodges is an Outdoor Drama about Halloween night 1906 in the Blue Ridge mountains, when one of the students from the Biltmore Forest School, Tommy Hodges, disappeared. Follow along the wheelchair accessible one-mile Biltmore Campus Trail to meet characters from the historic Pink Beds community, hear stories, some based on the diaries of students of the Biltmore Forest School from 1903-1907, and find out what happened to Tommy Hodges.

The audience walks the trail from scene to scene, so wear warm clothing and walking shoes, and bring a flashlight. Hot cider and cookies are provided after each show. Performances start at 6:30pm and 8pm on each day.

Visit with the Acorn Patrol, a small group of classic campers in a re-created campsite of the early 1900’s, a time in history the Pisgah National Forest was in its infancy, and city folk were discovering the joys of outdoor recreation. Explore the gear of a by-gone day, four different styles of period canvas shelters, and traditional camp tools in use. Included in the cost of Cradle of Forestry admission.

On National Get Outdoors Day, admission to the Cradle of Forestry is FREE! The day supports Americans in seeking out healthy, active outdoor lifestyles, and includes skills teaching and demonstrations by western North Carolina’s outdoor recreation community.

Across the nation, sites offer a chance for you and your family to unplug and connect with the outdoors. At the Cradle we host multiple activities for you to discover the forest in our NC mountains, including guided activities, crafts, and self-guided tours of the property.

Cradle to Grave 30k & 10k Race

Cradle to Grave 30k & 10k Race

30k begins at 8am, 10k begins at 8:40am, both in front of the Cradle of Forestry’s Forest Discovery Center.

The Cradle to Grave 10k course utilizes part of the existing 30k course, as well as the Pink Beds Loop Trail, past fields of wildflowers and beaver ponds, while crossing creeks on bridges and rocks.

The Cradle to Grave 30k Trail Race course utilizes the Pink Beds Loop Trail, and then moves on to use forest service roads in the heart of Pisgah National Forest, finally climbing up to one of the most unvisited and spectacular views of pristine forest land available. The return trip utilizes several different trails, each with their own unique topography, beauty, and characteristics

Opening Day Appalachian Folkways Celebration

The Cradle of Forestry in America reopens for the 2019 season today!

Opening day at The Cradle of Forestry celebrates Appalachian culture and heritage from the days of the Biltmore Forest School, so on this day, there will be demonstrations of open hearth cooking, laundry, blacksmithing, traditional music and games, and you can help plow the garden in the traditional way, using draft horses, plus check out the many other activities available at the Cradle of Forestry.

This event is Included with the cost of admission, which is $3 for ages 4-12 and $6 for ages 12+.
