Flat Rock Playhouse presents “All Shook Up”

Flat Rock Playhouse presents “All Shook Up”

Travel back in time to 1955 to a small, dreary cookie-cutter town where everything is about to change. A young mechanic, Natalie, dreams for adventure and love. Suddenly, a mysterious, leather-jacketed, guitar-playing, hip-swinging stranger shakes up the people of this small town as they discover romance, rock & roll, and riotous fun! This musical fantasy is built around songs made famous by Elvis Presley including hits like “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Love Me Tender,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” and, “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. Backed by a rousing Elvis score, this crazy and uplifting musical comedy will have audiences jumpin’ out of their blue suede shoes! “This is a great big Broadway show that never loses its mind or its light touch, with the accent on fun. It’s a roustabout’s joyride.” Journal News “A mixed-up merry-go-round of fun anchored by all those Presley tunes. Lightweight, to be sure, but it floats very nicely indeed.” Associated Press

Shows Wednesday through Sunday. Times vary by day, check the Flat Rock Playhouse website!

The Hendersonville Community Theatre’s Second Stage presents ‘U Rang Durang?’

The Hendersonville Community Theatre’s Second Stage presents ‘U Rang Durang?’

“U Rang Durang?” includes two of Durang’s most popular one acts, For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls and  ‘dentity Crisis, combined together into one night of bizarre hilarity. These crackpot comedies both turn family upside down in a way that only Christopher Durang can.

For Whom the Southern Bell Tolls

In this parody of THE GLASS MENAGERIE, the fading Southern belle, Amanda, tries to prepare her hyper-sensitive, hypochondriacal son, Lawrence, for “the feminine caller.” Terrified of people, Lawrence plays with his collection of glass cocktail stirrers. Ginny, the feminine caller, is hard of hearing and overbearingly friendly. Brother Tom wants to go the movies, where he keeps meeting sailors who need to be put up in his room. Amanda tries to face everything with “charm and vivacity,” but sometimes she just wants to hit somebody.

‘dentity Crisis

Recovering from a nervous breakdown, Jane is nursed and nagged by her relentlessly cheerful mother, and confused by her oversexed brother—who keeps changing into her father, her grandfather and her mother’s French lover. Eventually all (including Jane’s psychiatrist, who undergoes a sex change operation and swaps places with his wife) change characters again and become Jane herself—leaving her with no identity at all and pointing up the near impossibility of self-identification in our uncertain times.

But as the outsiders start to make soup out of a stone, each of the locals is prompted to contribute to the ever-growing, communal meal.

South Pacific

South Pacific

The Flat Rock Playhouse presents Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s classic musical South Pacific!

Set against the dramatic background of an idyllic South Pacific island during WWII, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific intertwines the themes of romance, duty, and prejudice to create a story that is all at once hilarious, heartbreaking, and thought-provoking. Based on the anecdotes of a real-life U.S. Navy commander who was stationed on an island, the musical follows two intercultural love stories: Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with Emile, a French plantation owner on the island who has two children from his late Polynesian wife; at the same time, U.S. Lieutenant Cable falls for a beautiful island native named Liat. Both Americans find themselves struggling to reconcile their own cultural prejudices with their amorous feelings, all the while under the dark cloud of a war that is coming ever closer to their island paradise.

Shows Wednesday through Sunday. Times vary by day, check the Flat Rock Playhouse website!

Hendersonville Community Theatre presents Hairspray Jr.

Hendersonville Community Theatre presents Hairspray Jr.

Hendersonville Community Theatre will shake and shimmy when students from Henderson, Buncombe, Polk, and Transylvania counties perform Hairspray JR. Hairspray JR. is presented by Champion Comfort Experts of Hendersonville.

The family-friendly show captures the spirit and turmoil of 1962 Baltimore through laughter, dance, romance, and deliriously tuneful songs. Hairspray JR. also includes the important message: that acceptance comes in all shapes, sizes, and nationalities.

The story follows Tracy Turnblad, a full-figured girl with full-figured hair and a big heart, who has only one passion – to dance. When her determination and rock ‘n roll moves land her a spot on a local television dance program, “The Corny Collins Show,” she is transformed from an outsider to an irrepressible teen celebrity. This trendsetter in dance and fashion uses her fame to win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, challenge the program’s reigning princess Amber, and rally against racial segregation…all without denting her ‘do.

There will be a complimentary opening night pre-show party and reception on July 20 starting at 6:30.

Moonlight & Magnolias on HCT 2nd Stage

Moonlight and Magnolias is based on the allegedly true tale of how the final script for the blockbuster 1939 movie Gone with the Wind came about. In it, producer David O. Selznick, desperate for a hit, shuts down production of the film, locks himself, screenwriter Ben Hecht and legendary director Victor Fleming into Selznick’s office for five days to give birth to one of the most beloved films of all time. Surviving on bananas and peanuts, the trio fight hunger, sleep deprivation and blocked intestines to write some of the most famous lines in cinematic history.
