Rhythm & Brews Concert presents The Rad Trads and Honey Island Swamp Band

Rhythm & Brews Concert presents The Rad Trads and Honey Island Swamp Band

Rhythm & Brews Concert Series, in Downtown Hendersonville NC, wraps up the 2019 season with The Rad Trads performing at 5:30 PM and Honey Island Swamp Band at 7:30 PM.
Hailing from Brooklyn NY, The Rad Trads distinguish themselves in ways few bands can. Already drawing lines around the block at home, the globe-trotting group’s singular take on rock n’ roll mixes punk rock energy, horn drenched soul, and jazz precision, all with a lighthearted but sincere delivery. Challenging but humorous, at times, the band bring to mind Springsteen and his “Big Man” Clarence Clemons, Dylan’s Blood On The Tracks-era vocal style, and Wilco’s epic guitar breakdowns.

The New Orleans based Honey Island Swamp Band is described as Bayou Americana, that critics have compared to legendary Blues-Roots-Rock Artists such as The Allman Brothers, Little Feat and The Band. The band encompasses the sounds of blues, roots, country, and soul along with honest and heartfelt lyrics from life experiences such as Hurricane Katrina in their hometown. “We’re diverse and complex people,” explains Chris Mule, the band’s guitarist, “and our audiences are as well. So we try to let our music reflect that.”

Rhythm & Brews is a free outdoor concert series offering local foods, wines, craft beers and ciders. Hands On! Children’s Museum booth provides fun for the whole family.

The concert is located on South Main Street between Allen and Caswell Streets in downtown Hendersonville NC. Tickets and wristbands, for the purchase of beer, wine and hard cider, will be located at the Downtown Hendersonville tent near the Visitor’s Center.

Rhythm & Brews is held on the 3rd Thursday of the month, May-September.

2nd Sundays at The Center, Sherry Lovett, Story Teller and Lillian Chase, Fiddler

2nd Sundays at The Center, Sherry Lovett, Story Teller and Lillian Chase, Fiddler

In August we are featuring story teller Sherry Lovett and 13 year old fiddler, Lillian Chase,

CAI presents Sherry Lovett, storyteller, and renown 13 year-old musician Lillian Chase in an afternoon of traditional Appalachian words and blue grass music.

Sherry Lovett has been a middle school teacher, elementary media specialist, homeschooler, educational cooperative leader, teaching artist for Penland School of Crafts, workshop facilitator, and, through it all, a storyteller. Through haunting ballads, historic narratives, and wise and wonderful folktales, Sherry swirls together a magical stew to delight audiences from school assemblies to a variety of adult performances. She connects with her audiences through universal themes and delivers stories with beautiful language and graceful movements. Her mission is to inspire, encourage, entertain, and connect with people through the art of storytelling.

Sixth generation Western North Carolina native, Lillian Chase, may be young, but she’s no stranger to old-time and bluegrass music. She began playing music at 6 years of age and now the 13-year old fiddler from Weaverville, NC has released her debut album. The CD highlights collaborations of the young fiddler with nationally and regionally known musicians she considers important mentors in her traditional music education. She has shared the stage with traditional music greats like Bobby Hicks, April Verch, Bruce Molsky, Riley Baugus, Pete Sutherland, and John Doyle, and many of these people appear on the album.

The recording was made possible for Lillian through an award from the Acadia School of Traditional Music & Arts. The music school recognized her work and interest in traditional music through their 2017 Young Artist of the Year award. The award’s stated focus is to fund a young artist’s first professional recording, and to help launch the musical careers of the best and brightest young musicians of the next generation.

Lillian received several awards in 2017, including the prestigious Wayne Henderson scholarship. Celebrated flat pick guitarist Wayne Henderson sets aside proceeds from his annual festival to give to up-and-coming acoustic artists, specifically for their study of traditional Appalachian music. The Houston Caldwell Scholarship, given by HoustonFest in Galax, VA, also selected Chase as a winner this year for traditional music study.

2nd Sundays @ The Center is a series of unique events tailored to the reflective spirit of Sundays. Relax in the warm and intimate setting of The Center and let yourself unwind as you listen to live music. Then, allow our professional storytellers to take you on a journey through time, evoking history, memory, and connection. Each month we bring you a unique program with story and music themed for an immersive experience.
