Join the folks of the Apple Valley Model Railroad Club at the Historic Depot for the annual reading of the popular children’s Christmas story, The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. Readings begin following the Christmas parade in downtown. Space is limited to 40 per reading and will last 15-20 minutes per reading. Santa, free hot chocolate and goodies will also be available. All ages are welcome!

Turkey Trot 5k

Turkey Trot 5k

The City of Hendersonville will be hosting their annual Turkey Trot 5k Thanksgiving morning. The Trot is a run/walk event open to all ages, all fitness levels and all family members! The 5k starts in front of City Hall on Thanksgiving morning at 8:30 and travels through downtown ending back at City Hall. The entry fee is $12 which includes a t-shirt. This is a non-sanctioned event – we’re here for fun and exercise. Event is rain or shine, sleet or snow!

Due to expected inclement weather, this event has been moved to November 1st! All other aspects of event will remain the same.

New and improved for 2019, the Treat Street Carnival takes the annual Trick or Treat Street of Hendersonville’s past and expands upon it! This year, Main Street will be closed to car traffic, making it extra safe for your family. This year, you’ll be able to:

  • Trick or treat with the merchants from Allen Street through 6th Avenue as well as additional community partners in pop-up tents in the 300 and 400 blocks of Main Street (starting at 5pm)
  • Participate in a Costume Contest to get great prizes, open to all ages and pets, held in the 400 block of Main (registration begins at 4:30pm, with judging to follow at 6pm)
  • Have fun with a DJ, dance party and inflatables in the 200 block (starting at 7pm)
  • Watch Halloween Movies on a large, outdoor screen in the 300 block (beginning at 7pm)

This is a rain or shine event.

The 5th Annual Trick or Trail 5k & 1 Mile Spooky Sprint lets runners experience the beauty of DuPont Forest in a unique nighttime racing format. This run is Halloween themed, so runners of all ages are encouraged to come and run in costume, and are required to wear a headlamp or bring a flashlight.

Race starts and ends at the Guion Farm area in DuPont State Forest.

Bee Bold Pollinator Festival

Join us as we celebrate National Honey Bee Day with our inaugural Bee Bold Festival! Bold Rock Hard Cider, along with Bee City USA – Hendersonville, aim to raise awareness of the role of honey bees and other pollinators. Honey bees are the world’s most important pollinator of food crops, making them a crucial member of our community. No bees, no Bold Rock! Festivities include live music by Jake Burns Music from 2-5pm, vendors, honey tastings, educational workshops, observation bee hives, plant sale, and other fun activities! Vendors and organizations include Carolina Bee Farm, BeeHaven Gardens, Bullington Gardens, Hands On! Children’s Museum, Cornerstone Tea, Mills River Farmers’ Market, Henderson County Beekeepers Association, and more! We will also be bringing back the Ginger Bee Cocktail! This cocktail features a delightful blend of lemon juice, local honey from the Henderson County Beekeepers Association, and Bold Rock Hard Cider’s Ginger Cider. $1 from each cocktail sold will be donated directly to the “Bring the Hive Alive!” downtown HVL bee mural initiative – http://handsonwnc.org/hive. It’s a simple plot line but somehow expresses all the joys and complexities of life. Two of these children, George Gibbs (Allen Law) and Emily Webb (Tara Sweeney) fall in love as adults and despite last minute nerves, get married.Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer, Tony and Academy Award winning play is a beloved theater classic.

Every afternoon at 2pm in June, July & August, join one of the Chimney Rock Park naturalists for an informal program where your family will love animals! Kids of all ages are sure to take home some fun facts and special memories. Then, grab a Track Trail brochure at the Animal Discovery Den and round out the day with a hike along the Great Woodland Adventure trail with 12 education stations. Don’t forget your camera!

On these days, Santa will be on the Visitor Center stage to take photos with your kids from 2-6pm (bring your camera!) and from 11am-7pm, the iceless skating rink will be open, you can play curling on two iceless lanes, and enjoy cocoa, snacks and games! Skating costs $8 for adults, $5 for kids ages 10 and under, and includes skate rental. Curling costs $5 per person for 30 minutes of play.

Christmas Tours at Historic Johnson Farm

Historic Johnson Farm will host Christmas tours December 17-21 at 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM each day. Tours of the festive farmhouse will be available as well as a Christmas craft and hot chocolate. The Heritage Weavers and Fiber Artists will have their gift shop open each day. Tours are $5 for adults, $3 for students, and free for children under 5. Reservations are required.
