Enjoy the 30th Annual Spring Festival at Historic Johnson Farm, a heritage education center. Step back into the past for a family-friendly, entertaining event suitable for all family and individuals of all ages. The event is from 10 am to 4 pm. The festival features heritage crafts and activities, farm animals, house tours, live music by renowned youth fiddler Lillian Chase and the Deadpan String Band, food for purchase, and more! All activities take place on the 15-acre farm that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a NC Cultural Treasure. The farm features 10 historic structures including an 1880s brick farmhouse and a 1923 boarding house that is home to the Heritage Weavers and Fiber Artists.

Opening Day and Appalachian Folkways Celebration at the Cradle of Forestry in America

Rescheduled from its original date to May 1st, Opening Day at the Cradle of Forestry celebrates Appalachian culture and heritage from the days of the Biltmore Forest School. Visitors will journey back in time to a small 1900’s mountain community on the historic Biltmore Campus Trail to explore how people of the day worked and played. Guests are encouraged to interact with demonstrators, who bring the community to life with working draft horses, open hearth cooking, old time wash, blacksmithing, traditional music and games. This year’s opening day is a part of the Appalachian Folkways Series, focusing on the theme of farming, food and family traditions.

Flat Rock Playhouse begins their Studio 52 Family Series with the “terrific” show about “some pig,” Charlotte’s Web, which runs on the Leiman Mainstage March 13th through the 28th.

Wilbur, an irresistible young pig, who desperately wants to avoid becoming “pork chops,” meets an extraordinary spider who proves to be “a true friend and a good writer.” The best American children’s book of the past two hundred years, this treasured tale, complete with endearing farm animals, explores bravery, selfless love, and the true meaning of friendship.

Polar Express Reading

Join the folks of the Apple Valley Model Railroad Club at the Historic Depot for the annual reading of the popular children’s Christmas story, The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. Readings begin following the Christmas parade in downtown. Space is limited to 40 per reading and will last 15-20 minutes per reading. Santa, free hot chocolate and goodies will also be available. Hendersonville produces the vast majority of North Carolina’s apples, and apple farming is a way of life in Hendersonville.
